Intersil Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance analog semiconductors, announced the release of the ISL9301 battery charger. This high-input voltage battery charger can safely handle input voltages up to 28V. Intersil’s ISL9301– a 3mm x 3mm Single-cell Li-ion/Polymer Battery Charger – Combines 28V Maximum Input Voltage, Power Path Management and Integrated Battery Disconnect Switch.

The battery charger features dynamic power path management to optimize charge and system currents. With multiple power paths – one for charging and another for device operation – the ISL9301 enables simultaneous charging and powering of any handheld device operating from a single cell Li-ion battery. This feature allows immediate operation of cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players even when the battery is fully discharged. The battery charger also extends a battery disconnect function that prevents any leakage or battery drain when the handheld device is not in use. This feature greatly helps to maximize battery life.

The ISL9301 is a fully integrated high input voltage single-cell Li-ion battery charger with power path management function. This battery charger performs the CC/CV charge function required by Li-ion batteries. The charger accepts an input voltage up to 28V but is disabled when the input voltage exceeds 10.5V OVP threshold. The 28V rating eliminates the overvoltage protection circuit required in a low-voltage charger. Superior overvoltage protection is achieved through the ISL9301’s high input voltage and integrated overvoltage protection circuit which enables an automatic shutdown feature when input voltages exceed 10.5V during normal operation. The charge current and the end-of-charge (EOC) current are programmable with external resistors. When the battery voltage is lower than 2.8V, the charger preconditions the battery with 16% of the programmed charge current. When the charge current reduces to the programmable EOC current level during the CV charge phase, the EOC indicator (CHG) will toggle to logic LOW to indicate the end-of-charge condition. The charger will continue to charge until the user programmed timeout interval has elapsed, then the charger is terminated.

The power path feature in the ISL9301 battery charger also allows the charge to terminate when the battery is full while continuing to supply the system with the requested power. This minimizes unnecessary charge and discharge cycles and improves battery life. The High-input voltage battery charger uses separate power paths to supply the system load and charge the battery. This feature allows the system to immediately operate with a completely discharged battery. This feature also allows the charge to terminate when the battery is full while continuing to supply the system with the input source, thus minimizing unnecessary charge/discharge cycles and improving the battery life.
