High-voltage linear regulators with a switched output and load-dump protection
Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX15009/MAX15011 highly integrated, 300mA automotive linear regulators with a switched output and load-dump protection. The MAX15009/MAX15011 are 300mA, automotive linear regulators with a current-limited switched output and load-dump protection. These devices save space and cost by reducing component count, while improving performance and reliability over discrete solutions. Designed to withstand harsh operating conditions, these low-dropout (LDO) regulators operate over a wide, 5V to 40V supply-voltage range, protect against load-dump transients up to 45V, and provide short-circuit and thermal-shutdown protection. The MAX15009/MAX15011 are ideal for automotive instrument clusters, infotainment systems, telematics, and climate control applications.
The MAX15009/MAX15011 integrate a switched output with the LDO regulator for current-limit, load-dump, short-circuit, and thermal-shutdown protection. The OVP controller (MAX15009) provides additional load-dump protection and allows the use of lower cost DC-DCs. The MAX15009/MAX15011 high-voltage linear regulators provide independent enable inputs for the linear regulator, switched output, and overvoltage protector (MAX15009 only) for better control of each function. The MAX15009/MAX15011 feature short-circuit and thermalshutdown protection. These devices offer highly integrated power management solutions for automotive applications such as instrument clusters, climate control, and a variety of automotive power-supply circuits. The switched output of the MAX15009/MAX15011 incorporates a low RDS(ON) (0.28Ω, typ) pass transistor switch internally connected to the output of the LDO regulator. This switch features accurate current-limit sensing circuitry and is capable of controlling remote loads. The MAX15009/MAX15011 feature an adjustable current limit and a programmable delay timer to set the overcurrent detection blanking time of the switch and autoretry timeout.
The MAX15009 includes a 300mA LDO regulator, a switched output, and an overvoltage protection (OVP) controller to protect downstream circuits from high-voltage load dump. The MAX15011 includes only the 300mA LDO regulator and switched output. Both devices operate over a wide supply voltage range from 5V to 40V and are able to withstand load-dump transients up to 45V. The 300mA LDO regulator consumes 67µA quiescent current at light loads and is well suited to power always-on circuits during “key off” conditions. The LDO features independent enable and hold inputs, as well as a microprocessor (µP) reset output with adjustable reset timeout period. The MAX15009 OVP controller operates with an external enhancement mode n-channel MOSFET. While the monitored voltage remains below the adjustable threshold, the MOSFET stays on. When the monitored voltage exceeds the OVP threshold, the OVP controller quickly turns off the external MOSFET. The OVP controller is configurable as a load-disconnect switch or a voltage limiter. The MAX15009/MAX15011 are offered in a thermally enhanced, 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin TQFN package, and are fully specified over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range.
Offering low power consumption, these linear regulators consume only 70µA of quiescent current in a stand-alone configuration, and 16µA in shutdown mode. Well suited for always-on circuits, these devices provide enable and hold inputs for “key off” conditions. To save space and cost in automotive applications, the MAX15009/MAX15011 provide an additional low-resistance switched output that can be used to independently power remote loads. The switched output features a current-limit sensing circuit with an adjustable current limit, as well as adjustable current-limit fault blanking and autoretry delay. The MAX15009/MAX15011 are ideal for instrument clusters, infotainment systems, telematics, and climate control in automotive applications. Additionally, to further save cost and improve performance, the MAX15009 integrates an overvoltage-protection (OVP) controller that can be configured as a switch controller or as a voltage limiter. This OVP controller protects downstream circuits from high-voltage load dump, thus enabling the use of lower cost DC-DCs.
