PC/104-Plus single board computer

VersaLogic, a leading supplier of high-quality board-level computer products for embedded OEM applications, announced at the Embedded Systems Conference that it has released Cougar, a new PC/104-Plus single board computer (SBC) for embedded OEM applications. The Cougar is a feature-rich, mid-performance single board computer that offers very low power consumption without sacrificing performance. Equipped with dual 10/100 Ethernet, USB 2.0 ports, and RS-232/422/485 COM ports, the Cougar is ideal for military, avionics, homeland security, medical, and other embedded computing applications.

Cougar uses highly-integrated AMD LX 800 processor that delivers Celeron® 800 MHz-equivalent performance while drawing less than 5 watts of power. This highly-integrated processor, along with its companion chip, provide the majority of the SBC’s on-board I/O, including USB 2.0 support, high performance video, and RS-232/422/485 COM ports. Standard on-board features include 256 MB soldered-on SDRAM, dual 10/100 Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, IDE interface, and three COM ports. Dual 10/100 Ethernet provides fast network access and boot ROM support. Four USB 2.0 ports provide flexible I/O options for keyboard, mouse, floppy drives, and other devices. Removable non-volatile media has no moving parts and is bootable. No moving parts are required for CPU cooling. A CompactFlash® socket provides reliable, high-capacity on-board storage, with no moving parts. Flexible addon options for keyboard, mouse, external storage and other devices are provided via USB ports.

The system board includes integrated super video graphics array (SVGA) and low voltage differential signal (LVDS) flat-panel support with MMX & 3DNow! for video-intensive applications. The high resolution video output can be configured for either standard desktop-type displays or LVDS flat panels. The PC/104-Plus interface supports both IS A and PCI add-on modules. Standard pass-through connectors allow the board to be used either above or below other PC/104 modules. It may also be used as a CPU module for a larger system by plugging it into a proprietary base board that includes specific user I/O circuitry. The benefits of fanless operation (no moving parts), soldered-on system memory (256 MB DDR Memory), high performance video (analog and LVDS flat panel outputs for 18 and 24-bit displays), and extended temperature operation (-40° to +85°C) make the Cougar an ideal choice for demanding military, aerospace, medical and industrial applications.

The Cougar features a General Software Embedded BIOS with OEM enhancements. This field-reprogrammable BIOS supports custom defaults and the addition of firmware and firmbase applications for security processes, remote booting, and other pre-OS software functions. The Cougar is compatible with a variety of popular operating systems, including Windows, QNX, VxWorks, and Linux. Available customizations include conformal coating, customized BIOS, revision locks, custom labeling, RTV and wire wrap for shock and vibration protection, and many other options.
