Video correction LSI with built-in frame memory for monitoring cameras
Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. today announced ML87V21072, a video correction LSI for monitoring cameras with a noise reduction function and a FIFO frame memory. Using OKI’s original technology to reduce CCD noise efficiently, the LSI can correct the video to high quality even in low light intensity. Using OKI’s ML87V21072, the image quality can be greatly improved in CCTV cameras to monitor buildings and stores, network cameras to monitor over the Internet, and automobile cameras to monitor vehicle surroundings to avoid car accidents, thus offering a better user experience.
OKI offers a highly sophisticated 3D noise reduction system with frame, field and line correlation through use of a FIFO frame memory in the ML87V21072. Furthermore, with a built-in space filter with edge compensation, the LSI reduces high-pass noise that could not be reduced with 3D noise reduction alone. The ML87V21072 includes function to output high-quality pictures without jaggy lines, thus maximizing the built-in memory, and 2:2 pull-down output for videos and video flip vertical output. Because the LSI has a function to determine whether the video is a still picture or a moving video, it can apply stronger noise reduction for still pictures while limiting afterimage in video applications. The LSI includes a function to automatically apply brightness gain correction and color correction after applying noise reduction.
Though CCD image sensors are the most commonly used solution in monitoring cameras, noise caused by low-light intensity degrades the quality. Conventional noise reduction methods cannot improve image clarity enough as the noise reduction feature produces an afterimage as a side effect. However, with OKI’s new video correction LSI, users can experience a high-clarity, high-quality video. This is done by including three functions in the chip: OKI’s well-established original 3D noise reduction function; a function to apply suitable noise reduction to the still picture or video by automatically determining the type of video; and a function to automatically correct low-light intensity and backlighting. The LSI also includes a video encoder function, and is compatible with DSP interface, which makes it possible to directly connect with DSP in CCD image sensor applications. The noise reduction function in ML87V21072 offers high-quality videos and helps to compress video when using MPEG-4. By first applying noise reduction to a video using ML87V21072, and then compressing it with an MPEG-4 encoder LSI, such as OKI’s ML86410, the file size can be reduced to approximately one-fifth the size of the original file. OKI plans to add distortion correction functions and include video recognition technology for more value-added video correction LSI products.
The input interface is compatible with ITU-R BT.656, 510H, 760H CCD sampling, and the output interface is compatible with ITU-R BT.656, 510H, 760H. The LSI is also compatible with analog composite signal and S-video signal through its built-in video encoder, enabling it to directly connect with DSP circuits in CCD image sensor applications. By utilizing this LSI in a DVR, one can achieve recording time approximately 5 times longer than with conventional models. In addition, in a MPEG-4 network camera, the chip can deliver high-quality video at a low bit rate. The ML87V21072 comes in two package sizes: 90pin BGA(6.4mm x 10mm) and 100-pin TQFP(14mm x 14mm). The smaller 90pin BGA is suitable for inclusion on standard boards for monitoring camera modules.
